Now that you are in the second half of life, have you questioned why it is you are here? What is it you came here to do? This may sound like a heavy subject but stay with me for a few paragraphs and I’ll attempt to make you glad you did.
As the Beatles promised,
I’ll sing you a song and I’ll try not to sing out of tune.
For much of my life I have thought that if I wanted to express myself creatively it had to be in art or music. In studying more I realized that creativity has everything to do with the ability to think a new thought- any new thought and act upon it. It doesn’t have to be in art or music.
It can be fixing cars or simply the way you live your life. You can jump start your creative energy by thinking about what makes you come alive. Do you want to build on what you have done before or do you want to move in a new direction? Do you want to go into the Peace Corps in Bolivia or do you want to go to your dining room table and make scrapbooks with your grandchildren?
Up until several years ago, I had never been interested in writing. I imagined sitting down with pen in hand and not having anything to write about. One afternoon I decided to figure out what that internal nudging was trying to tell me and sat down to write about not having anything to write about. What a surprise! Through that experience I found that writing brings me immeasurable joy and adds so much value to my life.
Dr. Gene Cohen in his book, The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life writes,
Different than many other cells in our body, brain cells called neurons show adaptive capacity regardless of age. It is clear that our brain function and creative potential don’t diminish as other body systems do.
The unique combination of creativity and life experiences creates a dynamic dimension for inner growth and the opportunity to shine in the second half of our lives.
